Reading in Dalston this Thursday, and a poetry commission – update from Sophie M Herxheimer

I’m reading poems & telling fortunes live at Burley Fisher Books this Thursday 21st April, evening in Dalston. Please come.

I’ll be there with fellow hybrid artist-poets, the brilliant Astrid Alben, launching her book Little Dead Rabbit, poet Lucy Mercer, activist-writer Rose Gibbs, and poet, publisher and game inventor, Jon Stone. Should be fun – definitely interesting! Here is a link.

In other news: I had a commission to respond with poetry to new film Happening (out in cinemas this Friday.)

It’s a tough but brilliant watch, concerning as it does the trials of growing up female in 1960’s provincial France, and the shame around female sexuality (abortion in particular.)

The screenplay is based on the memoir of the same name by Annie Ernaux, and is directed with lush camerawork and great suspense by Audrey Diwan. The acting is amazing too. I wrote 4 poems which are appearing on Picturehouses instagram and twitter feeds this week, the links below are to the first one, that was shared on social media yesterday.

(Thanks to my nephew Jerome Bond for steady camerawork.)

Thanks for reading, and hope to see you out and about on the poetry road,

Sophie x
